What it was like on the ground

Standing at the dam's overlook, the scale is hard to process — a wall of concrete holding back a reservoir hundreds of kilometers long, with the misty Xiling Gorge stretching beyond it. The smaller boat trip into the gorge was the emotional highlight: cliffs rising straight from green water, a few stilt houses, and a fisherman's boat that felt like a scene from a scroll painting. Yichang itself surprised us — a clean, walkable city with a long riverside promenade where families flew kites at dusk. The honest verdict: the dam is a box-tick for many, but the gorge around it is the real reward, and it is easy to underestimate how much time the dam tour, the shuttles and the security checks actually take — budget a full half-day for the dam alone.

How do you get to Yichang & Three Gorges?

Yichang is the river-and-rail gateway to western Hubei, on the Shanghai-Chengdu high-speed line.

By train: High-speed rail from Wuhan (2h, CNY 100-150) and Chongqing (4h). Yichang East station connects to the dam by bus or taxi.

By air: Yichang Sanxia Airport has domestic flights from major cities; the dam and gorge are reached by road.

What should you eat in Yichang & Three Gorges?

Three Gorges fish hotpot (三峡鱼火锅) CNY 80-160

Fresh Yangtze fish simmered in a spicy or clear broth. Order the clear broth to taste the fish, not the chili.

Liangxia (凉虾) CNY 5-10

Yichang's summer drink: tiny rice-flour 'shrimp' in sweet osmanthus syrup. A local refreshment you will not find elsewhere.
